Thompson & Knight has embraced sustainability as a basic tenet of excellence in our organization. By centering our business environment on an enduring model, we better serve our clients, communities, and employees. The Firm's Sustainability Committee (the Committee) is led by Environmental Practice Leader Jim Morriss and includes attorneys and staff from all areas of the Firm. The Committee is tasked with assisting the Firm in achieving its sustainability goals.
As part of this initiative, Thompson & Knight has adopted the American Bar Association's "Model Sustainability Policy and Implementation Guidelines for Law Organizations" which includes, among other things, the reduction of our carbon footprint. We are implementing and measuring several of the Model Policy's action items, as well as other steps, as they make sense financially and culturally within the different offices in our organization.
Thompson & Knight has already achieved several milestones including our Silver Certification in LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for commercial interiors (LEED-CI) from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for our new offices in the Dallas Arts District. According to publicly available USGBC records, this certification is the first of its kind awarded to a law firm in the State of Texas. Further, the accomplishments we have achieved with our global Diversity and Inclusion program complement our social framework of sustainability. We promote reusable materials and recycling. We have also adopted the national Big Green Box program, which offers a low-cost way to recycle used batteries and small electronic devices. In addition to our various environmental conservation programs, the Firm has been a standing member of the U.S. Business Council for Sustainable Development since 1995, the goal of which is to "show the benefits sustainable development can provide to a company's triple bottom line by generating economic returns while improving the environment and society."
Thompson & Knight has always practiced law in a manner that serves our clients most effectively. We also seek to improve the quality of life both within our Firm and in our communities by promoting social and environmental responsibility while sustaining our economic viability. By taking appropriate actions and sharing our experience with others, we expect to positively Impact our workplace, our clients, our communities, and our future.
